Proto-technique refers to the pre-conditions of living experience in the body, which underlie all human movement. It is a practice that can be applied to and support any style of dance technique. This is a process-oriented dance class focused on how we experience ourselves moving and how we imagine ourselves into being. The aim is to develop self-awareness as a tool for creating and refining our own dance practices. It is a class about dancing in context. It includes material from experiential anatomy, ideokinesis and the Feldenkrais Method and is part interactive lecture, part guided and part open movement exploration. The continual mapping of movements back to the simple acts of standing and walking means the material is approachable and useful for anyone.

Malcolm Manning is a somatic movement researcher, educator, mentor and artist. In his classes, he shares his inquiry of what it is to be a thinking, feeling, moving subject in this world through developing a dialogue with ourselves and our environment in which we are empowered to be our own experts. He offers his work as a resource for performing arts professionals in dance centres, for dance companies, at festivals, and on higher education programmes. He also teaches a workshop series for every body called BodySchool in which applies his work to everyday life situations.

He is certified to teach the Feldenkrais Method® and the Body And Earth work developed by Andrea Olsen and Caryn McHose. He studied for two years at SNDO Amsterdam and has an MA in Dance Pedagogy. He made extensive studies of Contact Improvisation, Authentic Movement, Movement Shiatsu, Body Mind Centering and experiential anatomy.

„A collaborative workshop proposition from two-practitioners who place the experience of the body at the centre of their dance practices. A simple juxtaposition of classes, framed by ongoing dialogue and exchange, adds up to more than the sum of its parts.“ Malcolm Manning

„Our practices converge from different territories and modalities creating a map that holds the essence of the individual artist primed and ready to take action from the depth of their being. Respect and responsiveness unfold moment to moment creating possibilites that are both refined and wild simultaneously.“ Sarah Shelton Mann

Malcolm Manning (UK/Helsinki), dancer and somatic movement researcher. Certified teacher of Feldenkrais Method® and Body And Earth™. Studied at SNDO and holds an MA in Dance Pedagogy. Teaches process-oriented technique, composition, and contact improvisation classes.

The Laban movement studies offer a system of reading motion through the analytical parameters body, space, dynamics and form. A deeper understanding of movement within its theoretical context helps to develop a “moving knowledge” and concrete tools for everyone working within a movement and dance context.

"Next level" is based on Flying Low technique and the Passing Through Game of David Zambrano. It is about energy, group dynamics, challenging the limits to finding innovation. Applying the energy and the rhythms of  traditional dances from Mozambique we practice our awareness of multi directions, calm running, capoeira drills and jumps in to the floor and out of the floor with fluid joints and muscles (like water). We will break all obstacles that we think we face in our daily training and take ourselves to another level.

Edivaldo Ernesto (Mozambique/Germany) dancer, teacher, choreographer, improvisation expert. With Mozambican traditional dance background, western African traditional dance influence. DanceWeb Scholarship in 2005. Performances and improvisations with David Zambrano since 2003, assistant teacher for Flying Low and Passing Through technique since 2008. Workshops and regular teaching at various dance institutions and festivals across Europe, including P.A.R.T.S, Radial System and DansCentrumJette in Brussels. Edivaldo has been a permanent ensemble member of Sasha Waltz & Guests since 2008 and collaborates with Judith Sánchez Ruíz since 2012.

During this week we will use the protected and codified environment of the dance studio only to prepare our bodies and minds, our perceoption and senso-motorical system to go out to explore the urban environment. Here we perceive the space as a communication field between cause and effect and our bodies become part of the space by reading and transmitting this process. Through constant shifts between dancing and everyday life our bodies delve into the energetic fields, the sounds and the smells, the surfaces and volumes, stories and rhythms of our urban environment. When does this research turn into a performance? We decide together which direction to take it.

Jan Burkhardt, Tänzer, Choreograf. Zeitgenössische Tanztechniken, Laban/Bartenieff Bewegungsstudien, Contact Impro, BMC, multi-mediale Improvisation.

S-17 / Listening - Following the voice into the unknown

In this workshop the starting point is the voice and the destination is unknown. Through listening carefully to what one can produce with one's own voice, textures, tones, noises, a state of heightened attention is achieved and in this state many things become possible; one can end up in a dance, in a musical jam or in a theatrical character, or somewhere in between all three of them. What matters is to practice listening, to yourself and to others, without judgement or preconceived ideas, opening up space for being surprised by the voice and where it can lead you.

Alma Söderberg and Jolika Sudermann met at the Amsterdamse Hogeschool voor de Kunsten where they studied physical theatre (MIME) and choreography (SNDO). After their first collaboration "Freedom of Speech" (2008, Publikumspreis 100°Berlin) they made the successful duet "A Talk" (premiered in 2011, Stuttgarter Theaterpreis 2013) which has toured Europe for 3 years now with more than 70 performances. From observing everyday spoken language and filtering out its inherent music and dance, the Swedish-German tandem is now daring a step into the rather mysterious aspects of the human voice, starting from listening as an art form worth (re)learning.

Next to their common work, Jolika is teaching at the Dance Intensive program of Tanzfabrik Berlin, and has developed and toured her own works (PULSE 2010, INFANTEN 2013). Alma is now busy making the duet IDIOTER, after touring her solos COSAS (2010) and TRAVAIL (2012).

Alma Söderberg and Jolika Sudermann are supported by apap- advancing performing arts project.

Skill, Sensation, Instinct, Imagination

Contact Improvisation will be the common ground enabling us to continue deepening our skills into a rich kinaesthetic dialogue with others. By awakening our physical and sensory awareness we will bring mind, spirit and body into a state of readiness for dancing in a playful and spontaneous way. Various skills such as rolling smoothly, falling safely, inverting, supporting and giving weight effortlessly will be explored as we play with the physical forces of gravity, levity, momentum and inertia. Different strategies and structures for improvisation will focus on developing a playful and subtle presence in our dancing. Harwood’s current interests lie within the immediate and fullest use of all the senses, the subtle interplay between intuition and instinct, the dilation of the attention to it’s fullest, and the finely tuned use of the perceptions in performance.

Andrew de Lotbinière Harwood has been influential in the development of contact improvisation worldwide since 1976 and has dedicated himself to the research, education, development and dissemination of improvisation as a performing art for over 38 years. He began his dance career in 1975 with Linda Rubin in Vancouver, Canada, was artistic director of AH HA Productions, studied and performed with Steve Paxton, Nancy Stark Smith and Nita Little. Performance credits include Fulcrum, Jo Lechay, Marie Chouinard, and Jean-Pierre Perreault, he performed with the dance improvisation collectives The Improvisational Movement Fund, The Echo Case and Discovery Bal and has collaborated in creation and performance with Chris Aiken, Peter Bingham, Marc Boivin, Lisa Nelson, Kirstie Simson, Benno Voorham, Ray Chung, Lin Snelling, and Benoît Lachambre among many others. Andrew has taught and performed throughout North America and Europe as well as South America, Mexico, Australia, Eastern Europe, Israel and Russia. He is the recipient of the Canada Council’s Jacqueline-Lemieux award for the year 2000.

In many ways Pantsula dancing could refer to modern day HipHop and remains extremely popular amongst the youngsters of South Africa. The dance is fast, singular, sexy, weird, fun ... The dress code has been pro-masculinity but – no worries. As Pantsula is able to depict South Africa: hot, energetic and at times a bit dangerous. The music commands attention and respect that evokes the human body to writhe, wriggle and jerk every limb into a rhythm never seen before !

Sifiso Seleme living in Johannesburg, South Africa, learned and lived this dance in the streets of Soweto and Meadowlands. He works extensively as a performer, choreographer and political activist in South Africa and internationally. With his open heart and fine humor he will get you easily on his footsteps.
